JUNIORS SHINE ON THE GOLD COAST

Volleyball Queensland recently hosted its third consecutive Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC) on the Gold Coast from September 30 – October 06, welcoming 66 teams from across Australia and one international team from Thailand.

Participants competed across U15, U17, and U19 age groups in both boys and girls divisions and Championship and Divisional categories.

Damien Searle, AJVC Tournament Director, was impressed with the delivery of the event saying “AJVC ran very smoothly thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Volleyball Queensland and Volleyball Australia staff in the lead up to the event. This event is monumental in the amount of work it takes to deliver a championship for 67 teams on eight courts, across seven days of volleyball”.

Damien was appreciative of all involved in the pre-planning and lead-up work, as well as those who delivered the event adding, “I must thank all the event staff, the Chief Referee and his team, each of the states, Heads of Delegation, and coaches for their organisation before and during the tournament. Your hard work made for an excellent tournament for those that matter most, the athletes themselves”.

Congratulations to Queensland who took out the President’s Cup with 14 points, followed by South Australia (8 points), and Victoria (8 Points), with SA announced as second place on count back of Silver medals won. Queensland won 7 gold for the tournament, with South Australia (2) and Victoria (1) also winning gold. Thailand won International Silver in the U19 Girls division after battling it out in a close encounter against Victoria, going down 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 27-25).

Volleyball Queensland would like to thank Damien and his team for their contributions in improving this event each year and making 2018 a wonderful experience. Thank you to Volleyball Australia, our sponsors and partners, and the states, their athletes and staff for their participation and sportsmanship this year. Thank you also to all spectators and supporters who came out to the venue and cheered on their teams, it made for an electric atmosphere across the week.
