QLD Pirates Women Take the Title

Congratulations to the Queensland Pirates women’s team who defeated the Canberra Heat over the weekend to be crowned the 2018 AVL Champions!

The QLD Pirates men’s and women’s teams, along with the Buccaneer’s men’s side, travelled to the AIS in Canberra from 10-11 November to take on the Canberra sides on their home soil.

The QLD Pirates women’s side beat the Heat 3-1 on Saturday and went down to the wire in a five set thriller on Sunday taking the win 3-2 (25-13, 20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-8). With Canberra women to play 1 more match against UTSSU, the QLD Pirates women cannot be overtaken and have won the 2018 AVL title!

Well done to all of the athletes, coaches, and support staff on taking out the series and wearing the Queensland jersey with pride and passion.

If you missed the action, you can catch the thrilling women’s game vs the Canberra Heat from the weekend on the Queensland Pirates Facebook page.

The QLD Pirates men side are still in contention to be crowned champions for a third year in a row after two losses on the weekend. The team currently sits on top of the ladder with six wins and two losses, but the Canberra Heat and UTSSU still have two matches remaining. The QLD Pirates men will be watching closely as the outcome of these matches will decide who takes out the title.

The QLD Buccaneers men’s side finished with a win and a loss to round out the weekend of away matches, and will finish on top of the reserve grade ladder with a total of seven wins and one loss throughout the series.

The Queensland teams will travel to Melbourne next month to take on the best of the best from across Australia at the 2018 AVL Championships. The QLD Pirates teams will go in to the competition with confidence after a strong AVL series and we look forward to seeing them capitalise on the AVL home and away series victories.
